An excerpt from former Commissioner Lora Thomas's Newsletter dated 5-25-25, #25-21

This video addresses the many concerns about home rule, conceived and planned by the Douglas County Commissioners behind closed doors without citizen input/feedback.

This week the county posted the results of its bi-annual poll of residents, and some of the results are not only interesting, but compelling in their revelations on how Douglas County feels about its government.
As a Highlands Ranch resident, I am frankly sick and tired of Laydon--a Lone Tree resident--trying to shove INCORPORATION of Highlands Ranch down the throats of those of us who actually LIVE here in the Ranch. Unlike Lone Tree Laydon, we Ranchers already know that Highlands Ranch does NOT have enough commercial base to support the additional costs of a municipal government, and therefore we are not interested in taxing ourselves more to incorporate!
Click on the link below to see the survey results, and on Page 177 you can see that for Question 39 about Highlands Ranch incorporating, 54% are OPPOSED!
On that same Page 177, you can see that 56% of county residents are OPPOSED to home rule.
Below are more noteworthy highlights that I took right from the County's website:
50% said Douglas County is headed in the right direction, while 48% said the County is on the wrong track. (2% were unsure) In other words, HALF of county residents believe our county is headed down the WRONG TRACK!
A majority (52%) disagreed with the statement “Douglas County government listens to the people’s voice.”
From these results, it appears residents are getting fed-up with their voices being silenced as the Elected Officials think their role is to DICTATE what happens in Douglas County. Representative Government and Transparency are things of the past. Citizens are taking notice and DO NOT LIKE IT!
Marked drop in belief "Douglas County has a good county government"
In 2014 85% said this statement was accurate
In 2023 only 69% said this statement was accurate.
In 2025 only 64% agreed with this statement.
Direction of things in Douglas County
In 2000 62% of respondents indicated the county was heading in the right direction...
In 2025 that number has dropped to 50%...
Douglas County spends our tax dollars wisely
In 2006, 64% of respondents agreed with the statement
In 2023, only 50% believed their tax dollars were wisely spent
In 2025, only 49% believed tax dollars were spent wisely. . .
